Why Morning and Evening Runs Feel Different

Morning versus evening running looks like a straightforward matter of preference. It isn’t.
Body temperature, hormones, digestion and available fuel all shift through the day, and those shifts change how a run actually feels, not just how a runner feels about it.
What changes across the day
Core body temperature is lowest in the early morning and rises through the day, usually peaking in the late afternoon or early evening. Warmer muscles work more efficiently and joints move more freely. A 2020 review in Scientific Reports on time-of-day effects found that short, maximal efforts, such as sprints, jumps and isometric contractions, reliably peak somewhere between 4pm and 8pm.
For steady-state endurance running, the picture is less consistent. Not every trial finds a clear evening edge: a 2022 randomised cross-over study of adolescent soccer players published in BMC Research Notes (Fiedler et al.) tested the same 3,000m time-trial at 7–8am and 7–8pm and found no significant difference in pace, perceived effort or heart rate between sessions, with only blood lactate showing a modest (non-significant) gap. In summary, power and short sprint work show a fairly reliable afternoon/evening advantage; endurance pace is more individual and less predictable from the clock alone.
Morning sessions start from a cooler baseline. The same pace can feel harder early on. That does not make morning running worse; it simply means the body begins from a different starting point.
The empty-stomach advantage
Running before breakfast has a real physiological basis, not just a scheduling one. A 1987 study in Gastroenterology (Goo et al.) measured gastric emptying at 8am and 8pm in 16 healthy men and found that the stomach took 53.6% longer to empty a solid meal in the evening than in the morning; later studies on gut circadian rhythms have continued to find the same pattern. Running soon after a solid evening meal can leave undigested food shifting around for longer than it would after an equivalent morning meal, raising the chance of side stitches, bloating or a sudden need for a toilet.

Fasted morning running also changes the fuel mix. With lower insulin and little recent carbohydrate, the body leans more on fat during moderate efforts. The long-term effect on body composition is smaller than many expect once overall calories are considered. The practical gain is comfort: fewer mid-run digestive interruptions and a simpler routine for anyone who prefers not to time meals around training.
Consistency versus peak numbers
Laboratory markers often favour the afternoon and early evening for power and sprint work. Yet consistency usually beats chasing a peak lab number. A morning slot free of work or family demands is more likely to happen regularly, and a 2020 review in Exercise and Sport Sciences Reviews (Schumacher et al.) links consistent morning exercise to better long-term adherence and weight-management outcomes, likely a behavioural effect of a stable routine rather than a purely physiological one.
Personal body clock (chronotype) plays a part too. Morning types tend to perform closer to their best earlier; evening types may need longer to reach peak alertness. Most races still start in the morning, so training at that hour builds useful race-day readiness for many events regardless of natural chronotype.
Practical trade-offs
Morning (especially fasted): lighter on the gut (gastric emptying roughly a third to a half faster than in the evening), higher relative fat use at moderate paces, strong habit-forming potential, cooler conditions in summer, possible sleep cost if the alarm is too early.
Evening: higher body temperature and readiness for harder efforts, often better for intervals or short, high-intensity work, food still moving through the gut for longer if eaten close to the run, possible interference with winding down and sleep if the run finishes late.
Neither time is universally better. The runner who feels better, digests better and repeats the session more reliably will progress faster than the one chasing a small laboratory edge at an inconvenient hour.
Differences by sex, age and menstrual cycle
A 12-week randomised trial from Skidmore College, published in Frontiers in Physiology in 2022 (Arciero et al.), split 30 trained women and 26 trained men into morning (6–8am) and evening (6.30–8.30pm) multi-modal training groups. Women training in the morning lost more total and abdominal fat and saw a larger drop in blood pressure; women training in the evening gained more upper-body strength and power. Men showed the opposite pattern for cardiometabolic markers: the evening group saw the clearer blood-pressure and fat-oxidation benefits. Adherence was equal in both groups, so the difference isn’t simply about who turns up more often.
The menstrual cycle’s effect on performance is real but small. A 2020 systematic review and meta-analysis in Sports Medicine (McNulty et al.), pooling data from 78 studies, found that performance was very slightly reduced in the early-follicular phase (the first few days of a period) compared with every other phase. The effect size was small enough to call trivial, and a 2023 umbrella review in Frontiers in Sports and Active Living (Colenso-Semple et al.), covering the available meta-analyses on the topic, found no meaningful effect of cycle phase on strength performance either. Individual response varies widely, and tracking personal patterns over a few cycles is more informative than applying either the folklore or the group averages.
For younger runners the picture is thinner. Children’s peak performance windows may sit slightly differently from adults, and adolescents often drift toward an evening preference as their body clocks shift. Habit formation and enjoyment still outweigh fine-tuning the clock for most juniors.
In short, the biology points to real daily rhythms, yet the best practical choice is still the one that fits the individual runner’s digestion, energy, schedule and recovery.
