How Far Should Children and Teenagers Run?

How far should a child run?
It sounds like it should have a straightforward answer. A 10-year-old should run this far, a 13-year-old that far, and a 16-year-old something longer.
The evidence does not give us such a neat formula.
Children and teenagers develop at different rates, have different levels of running experience and may be taking part in very different activities. A young athlete who runs twice a week at an athletics club is in a different situation from one who is training seriously for cross country or track.
England Athletics takes this individual approach in its Youth Endurance Resource, produced to help coaches, athletes, clubs and parents support young endurance runners. The resource covers long-term athlete development, wellbeing, physiology, strength and conditioning, road running and training, and cautions against applying generic, schedule-based training programmes too rigidly, recommending instead that training is individualised according to the athlete’s needs.
That is an important starting point.
There is a difference between running for fun and endurance training
A child taking part in a game that involves running is doing something quite different from a young athlete completing repeated distance-running sessions every week.
For younger children, England Athletics currently encourages participation through formats that combine running, jumping and throwing rather than focusing solely on endurance running. Its U10 and U12 competition guidance describes these as fun, flexible and local opportunities intended as an introduction to competition.
That approach reflects a broader principle in youth sport: running can be part of a child’s physical activity without turning running distance into the main objective.
For a young athlete who wants to develop as a distance runner, the question becomes more complicated.
What distances does England Athletics recommend?
There is a useful distinction between competition distance and training distance.
England Athletics publishes recommended distances for youth cross-country competitions. Its current guidance recommends:

England Athletics describes these as guidelines for competition organisers, rather than universal prescriptions for what every young athlete should run. It also says that organisers should consider the physical and developmental age of the athletes taking part.
That distinction is important.
A recommended 5km cross-country race for an U16 athlete does not mean that every U16 runner should be training to run 5km every day, or that a particular weekly mileage is appropriate.
Training distance is a different question
This is where a simple age-based table becomes misleading.
England Athletics’ Youth Endurance Resource discusses training volume, intensity and the number of sessions in the context of the individual young athlete. Its associated Youth Endurance Workshop specifically highlights the need to consider chronological, biological, training, competition and developmental age when deciding what training is appropriate.
Two teenagers of exactly the same chronological age can therefore have very different training needs.
One might have several years of running experience.
Another might have only recently started.
One might be participating in several sports.
Another might already be training several times a week.
Growth and maturation also need to be considered.
The appropriate question is therefore not simply:
“How old is the runner?”
It is:
“What is appropriate for this particular young runner at this stage of their development?”
Why growing bodies need a different approach
Young runners are not simply smaller adult runners.
Growth changes the way the body responds to training, and adolescence can involve substantial changes in height, body composition, strength and coordination over relatively short periods.
A 2021 consensus statement on youth running, developed by an international group of sports medicine researchers and published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, identifies growth and maturation as factors requiring particular consideration in youth running injury risk, including the potential for growth-plate problems, and recommends individualising training and competition according to physical, biological and developmental factors rather than chronological age alone.
This does not mean that running is inherently dangerous for children.
It means that training needs to take account of the fact that a young athlete is still developing.
More running is not automatically better
This is particularly important for children who show early promise.
A young runner who is good at cross country may naturally want to run more.
Parents and coaches may also be tempted to increase training because a child is improving.
But endurance development is a long-term process.
England Athletics’ Youth Endurance Resource places considerable emphasis on long-term athlete development and late specialisation. It also includes specific material on underfuelling and overtraining as part of the wellbeing of young endurance athletes.
That is one reason we should be cautious about turning a promising junior runner into a miniature adult endurance athlete.
What does the research say about injury?
Research involving adolescent distance runners in England gives us some useful information.
A 2021 study of 113 competitive adolescent distance runners aged 13 to 18, recruited from England Athletics affiliated clubs and published in Frontiers in Sports and Active Living, found that 68% had experienced a running-related injury in the previous 12 months, and examined training frequency, volume and intensity as potential risk factors.
A 2024 study of athletes and coaches enrolled on England Athletics’ Youth Talent Programme, published in Annals of Medicine, found strong support for injury-prevention measures among competitive adolescent distance runners and their coaches. Interestingly, the runners identified “too much training” as the most common cause of running-related injury, while coaches were more likely to identify growth and maturation.
Neither finding establishes that a particular mileage causes injury.
Both do, however, reinforce the importance of managing training rather than assuming that more distance will always produce more progress.
Young runners blame too much training for their injuries; their coaches are more likely to blame growth and maturation.
What about teenagers running half marathons or marathons?
This is where the question changes significantly.
There is considerably more debate about long-distance races for young athletes than there is about ordinary running and youth cross country.
A 2024 narrative review of children’s participation in marathon races, published in the Journal of Functional Morphology and Kinesiology, identified overuse injuries, stress fractures and psychological burnout among the concerns that need to be considered, and noted that the evidence base for determining the safety of long-distance events in children remains limited.
There is more evidence from organised adolescent marathon programmes. A study of the Students Run Los Angeles marathon training programme, published in the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine, followed 1,927 students across a 28-week programme and recorded 583 injuries affecting 18% of runners. Almost all participants who entered the marathon completed it, with 99% finishing. Runners who were injured had run significantly further per week on average than those who were not.
That does not establish that marathon running is unsafe for every teenager.
It does show why the question should not be reduced to “Can a teenager physically run 26.2 miles?”
Being capable of completing a distance is not the same as establishing that a particular training programme is appropriate.
What about ultra running?
The case becomes still more complicated when the distance moves beyond the marathon.
A 2021 international consensus statement on youth participation in ultra-endurance running, published in Sports Medicine, found that most young participants in the events considered were aged 16 to 18, although younger children have completed ultra-distance events. The authors concluded that decisions about youth participation should consider factors including age regulations, medical and psychological wellbeing, training status, distance, elevation, environmental conditions, remoteness and available support.
In other words, there is no sensible universal answer such as “under 16s should never run more than X miles”.
The circumstances matter.
So how far should a junior run?
For younger children, running should generally be part of a broad range of physical activity rather than an exercise in accumulating mileage. England Athletics’ current U10 and U12 approach emphasises varied, multi-event participation.
For young athletes beginning structured endurance training, the emphasis should be on gradual development, variety, enjoyment and appropriate coaching rather than chasing a particular weekly mileage.
For established adolescent endurance runners, greater distances can become appropriate, but training should reflect the athlete’s experience, development, competition schedule and ability to recover.
For long-distance races, particularly half marathons, marathons and ultra-distance events, the decision deserves considerably more thought than simply checking whether the runner is old enough to enter.
A useful way to think about it
Rather than asking for a maximum distance based solely on age, consider five questions.
1. What is the purpose of the running?
Is it play? General fitness? An athletics session? Cross-country competition? Structured endurance training? A marathon?
Those are different activities with different demands.
2. How much running experience does the athlete have?
A teenager who has gradually developed their running over several years is in a different position from one who has suddenly started training for a long race.
3. What else are they doing?
Running is only part of a young person’s physical activity.
Other sports can contribute to fitness, strength, coordination and movement skills without adding more running mileage.
4. Are they recovering well?
Persistent tiredness, declining performance, recurrent injuries or a reluctance to train can all be reasons to stop and reassess rather than simply adding more recovery time to an increasingly demanding programme.
England Athletics’ youth endurance guidance places wellbeing, including the risks of underfuelling and overtraining, alongside physical development.
5. Is the training being individualised?
This is perhaps the most important question.
England Athletics explicitly cautions against prescriptive generic schedules for young endurance athletes and presents sample schedules as starting points that should be individualised.
That is a useful principle well beyond athletics.
What parents should take from this
There is no need to be alarmed simply because a child enjoys running.
Running can be an enjoyable part of a young person’s sporting life and can develop into a serious endurance sport during adolescence.
The concern is not distance in isolation.
It is the combination of distance, intensity, frequency, recovery, development, nutrition and the athlete’s wider sporting life.
A young runner does not need to avoid endurance running simply because they are young.
Nor does a talented young runner need to train like an adult simply because they are capable of doing so.
The verdict
There is no scientifically reliable table that says exactly how far every child should run at each age.
England Athletics’ current competition guidance does provide recommended cross-country distances, ranging from 3km for U12 competitions through to 10km for U20 competitions.
But those are competition guidelines, not weekly training prescriptions.
For training, England Athletics’ own youth endurance guidance takes a more individual approach. It emphasises long-term development, wellbeing and appropriate training, while cautioning against applying generic schedules without individualisation.
That seems a much more useful way to answer the question.
The right distance for a young runner is not determined by age alone.
It depends on the athlete, the stage of development, the purpose of the running and the way the training fits into the rest of their life.
For parents, that may be a less satisfying answer than a simple number.
For a developing young athlete, it is probably the more useful one.
